Department of Bengali

The Department of Bengali was established in the year 1960 and started General Course (then 2 year Pass Course) from the session 1960-61. Honours degree course was started during the session 1965-66 and the Post Graduate (M.A.) course was started in 2008-09.  This department deals with different branches of linguistics, literature, poetics, art of rhetoric and prosody.  Organization of departmental seminar and quiz, publication of wall magazine, organization of programs aiming towards cultivation of Bengali culture and close interaction among teachers and students are the prime features of this department.  From the session 2008-2009 this department has introduced its post-graduate section.  This department has already organized two UGC sponsored seminar programs.  Some of the faculty members are actively engaged in research work.  The department is going to organize a national level seminar/conference in close future.

The department is running a 2 year (4 semester) post graduate course in Bengali Literature since 2008 giving the degree 'M.A. in Bengali' jointly with the University of Calcutta.
